GCSE Construction

On Friday 28/02/2014 the Year 12 GCSE Construction and the Built Environment class in St. Patrick’s HS Keady, accompanied by class teacher Mr. P Nicholas and student teacher Mr. J Grugan visited the construction site of the new Keady Community Centre next door to the Caledonian in Keady. The construction project is in its infancy and is being carried out by Brendan Loughran & Sons Ltd from Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone. The site is part of the Considered Constructors Scheme which aims to make greater connections between the construction company, the local community and the project. Health and safety officer for the company Raymond Munroe and site foreman Seamus O’Boyle welcomed the pupils to the site and briefed them on the project, answered any questions they had and took them on a tour of the works completed to date. At this stage the site has been cleared, the foundations have been dug and most of the steel frame is erected. Today workers were busy laying ducting for services. The pupils were able to view construction processes which they had been studying in class over the past number of weeks in practice. The pupils hope to visit the site again shortly to view the laying of the suspended floors, cladding of the roof and the commencement of the cavity wall construction.
